Bullendale Mission

This was a mission through Skippers Canyon to the base of Mt Aurum (something that will no doubt be climbed/skied in the future).

I had read that there was a 4WD track in there…. so I figured I’d use the dirt bike for the first 25kms, then walk the last hour into the hut. Here are some pics of the easy part of the ride.

No more pics of the road – after that it got really nasty and taking fotos was the last thing on my mind. I also think I put the camera away somewhere safe where I wouldn’t break it (I had 2 nice falls). The first goal was to make it up to the base of Mt Aurum….

Just incase you thought that hut was big….

This is where I spent the night – was really nice although despite the fire it got to 2C (36F) inside the hut….

What gave me the idea for this trip was some pics of AJ and Nursey up here a wee while back. Here is the old dam…

Well, I did make it back – bike broke 2kms from the car, I lost 75% of my food on the way in, I’m bleeding from my right nipple to my right knee and I was really not up to scratch on the dirt bike.

But it wasn’t too bad, back in NZ 2 weeks, in the middle of no where, I’d be surprised if there were 20 people within 20kms of the hut, stars for Africa, blasting past cyclists on the bike (they passed me later while I walked back to the car but I had “first blood”), Kindle by candle light and although it might have been 3hrs later than I expected – I made it back, with all the toys…..

Giddyup!!!!

I think I deserved a drink so I dropped in the pub on the way home.
